Matt saw a tear starting to run down Julie’s cheek. He gently wiped it away. He shifted the conversation, saying, “Dad’s uniforms are kept in storage here. When Hapke was captured, it was by Ray Summers in World War II period uniform.”
All three looked surprised. Hector started to say something, but Matt held up his hand.
“Sean and Justin drew straws; either one could pass for Dad at their age. Justin took Hapke down in the woods alone. Whatever he did, he scared the living daylights out of the man. Jon didn’t help when he whispered something in the man’s ear after he was a prisoner. With their history, I’m sure he was the premier diplomat. He hasn’t stopped talking.”
“What do you mean by that?” asked Hector.
Matt smiled weakly. “He’s given up two other people who are being charged with your dad’s murder. These two arrests are leading to who knows how many dealers involved in the sale and distribution of drugs in the Rochester area. There are lots of arrests taking place right now, and a big dent is being put in the upstate New York drug trade, all because of the information he’s giving them. The man just can’t stop talking. It seems he’s found someone he’s more scared of than the cartels and gangs.”
“Who’s that?” asked Hector.
“Your grandfather’s ghost.”
