Nathan looked back at the prisoners. “When they wanted someone to pass their demands to besides the FBI, they requested Grandfather. He came to the island, and they treated him without respect or dignity. They have no honor, or they wouldn’t be doing this with children, so Grandfather told them to leave and they could keep their lives. They didn’t, so he sent Stephen and me. They’re your prisoners, but if they try to escape, we’ll deal with them in the old way.”
The eyes of all three prisoners grew large with fear, looking to Abby for an explanation.
“The old way?” questioned Abby.
“Your grandfather is one of the hereditary chiefs of the Mohawk,” chimed in Stephen. “He blessed us before we left and charged us with bringing these trespassers to justice. If not Sheriff James’s way, then the old way.”
Abby looked at Stephen for an explanation, only to receive a wink in return. She looked back down at her brother, who was staring intently at the prisoners as he said, “Nope, I hope they try to escape, or at least give us trouble.”
