The water lapped against the rocky shoreline in a soft and relaxing rhythm. A gentle breeze tousled the silver fur of a large alpha wolf as he drank from the lake—pausing to look up only after catching a peculiar scent. He stood perfectly still, elevating his snout into the air. The scent was unfamiliar—and close. The alpha female behind him released a low growl, indicating she perceived a threat.
The alpha male lowered his nose, staring over the water at the man sitting in a canoe. He knew this man. Every day for the last several weeks, the man had watched them, always keeping a respectable distance. Today was no different.
One of the other members of the pack also started growling, signaling danger. The alpha glanced over his shoulder. Members of the pack were focused to the right; that was the same direction the scent was coming from. He turned back to face the man in the canoe, who watched the pack intently.
