I couldn’t hold my tears back any longer. I pulled my hands up to try and dry my eyes; it was then that the creature lifted her arms out of the water and moved a fin-like hand to my shoulder. With a few more trills she moved her head in to nestle against mine.
“Thank you,” I said, tears still rolling down my cheeks.
Some time passed as I lay in wait for whatever fate had in store for me next. I was wounded and had no fight left in me.
Finally, a second sea creature, looking very much like the first, appeared. As she approached I sat up a little to greet her. We made eye contact. I looked into her large purple eyes and I began to speak when she flicked my nose. I was shocked and sat back to rub the saltwater from my eyes.
Looking down at my leg, this creature had clearly set her attention on my wound. She set a small box on the rock next to me and pulled out a pair of metal forceps. Splashing sea water on my leg she used the tool to remove a large splinter from my leg. The pain was intense and shot through my body. She proceeded to pull a glass jar from her medical kit and rubbed an ointment into the affected area. I laid back and held my hands over my mouth to keep from screaming as my muscles spasmed in pain. As she placed a wet green leaf atop the wound, I felt that the procedure was over.
