Gaza, then the Royal Palace at Alexandria
Year Four of Cleopatra's Reign (48 BC)
I immediately began thinking on Caesar's challenge, for a
challenge or test it clearly was. Of exactly what I was being tested was
less clear. After some thought, I decided it was a test of my mettle.
Every possible solution that came to me involved considerable
personal risk and a high probability of failure. I must have been
wearing a grimace of worry, because Charmion, who had been
preparing lunch, asked, "Of what are you so concernedly thinking,
"How to see Caesar," I replied glumly.
"Hmmm," Charmion replied with a smile. "Well, you're small and
slim. Perhaps you could fit into something to be delivered to Caesar."
"That’s it!" I said, my grimace turning into a broad smile.
"Charmion, you're a genius! Thank you!"
