“What happened to me?” she repeated, and he looked away, face shielded in the dark. “Did I pass out or something?”
“Yeah, that’s it.”
“Liar,” she growled. “I’ve never fainted in my life.”
“You were about to run to your death.” His blunt delivery was so out of character it left her speechless. “I wasn’t going to let that happen while I still had breath. Not when I wasn’t finished figuring out how to get us out of here.”
“And if you didn’t? What if you hadn’t found a way out?”
“Then you wouldn’t have died in pain.”
