“Do I? Do you?” He walked around the desk and kept himself between his son and the candlelight, speaking quietly. “Truly, do you? Our directive is to monitor and guide, not to create and force. Don’t dismiss that lightly.” He sighed. “And I know I’ve overused that litany. So, we’re even. Well, that’s no longer relevant. I believe you have several circumstances at critical points. Do what you must, but carefully. History must be allowed to move forward on its own course, like a river. We can only change directions slightly and slowly to avoid history bending and folding back on itself. Doing so could cost you your life and that of many others.”
