“Before that, we were together even though we didn’t admit it,” Permac said. “We worked together to get the artifacts away from the Carratians. You didn’t send me away and I didn’t leave you alone even when you hinted I should. I waited for you while you were in prison. Don’t sniff at that. Yes, I felt responsible, but I cared about you, too. And when you were taken out of prison, you didn’t have to come up to my place. You could have just wandered off. You’re resourceful enough. You could have managed on your own. I don’t think you really wanted to kill me.”
“I thought about walking off. I was shocked to find you were still on Carratia, to tell you the truth. I was mad, but I was curious, too. And, I’ll admit, I was relieved to find someone waiting to help me. A friend.” She stared out of the front viewport, watching the thousands of dots of light blinking in space. “And I wouldn’t have asked you to come along if I didn’t like you. I care about you, too.”
