“I made her a birthday party. Did you know she’s eleven now, Esmeralda?” She suddenly lifts the gold chain from around her own neck and struggles with the dainty clasp. Finally succeeding, she turns and fastens the necklace around Elise’s smooth throat.
“Now that’s a nice thing to do for your girl,” Esmeralda says. “Your mama, she taught you right, didn’t she?”
“What do you mean?”
“You learned to share. Out here on the street, don’t see so much sharing going on.”
