About the author

Fed up with polygraphs, security clearances and a daily commute, Caroline Lee fled a career writing classified reports for the Dept. of Defense to become a full-time storyteller and daydreamer-in-chief. Her musical theatre show, "The Last Storyteller" a tale based on her travels to Syria before the civil war, was presented in a public reading in collaboration with Midwest New Musicals and Light Opera Works. She enjoyed working with the musical theatre group of Chicago Dramatists and several of her musical theatre pieces have been presented in ASCAP-sponsored cabarets in Chicago.
Caroline lives with her husband in Delray Beach, FL. When she's done writing for the day, they often stroll the beach at sunset. and has author readings for kids online. She is thrilled that the first book, "Maxzyne Meets the Mannequins" won a 2020 Independent Press Award for Children's Fiction. Her second book, "Maxzyne and the Old Horse Theatre" won several Story Monster Royal Dragonfly awards. The third adventure for America's most Impulsive heroine is forthcoming. Caroline is a member of the Society of Children's Bookwriters & Illustrators.

However, unlike the Ramona books, "Maxzyne Meets the Mannequins" shows the sorrows, joys, and hopes of characters from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. Maxzyne is a wealthy but lonely African-American ten-year-old, and the story begins when she gives money to a homeless African-American artist. This generous act breathes life into a family of French mannequins in the window of a nearby Chicago department store. Maxzyne and the newly alive Elise set out to save Elise and her parents from having their heads removed. During their mission, they form a fun filled, faithful friendship.
Maxzyne also gets to know a variety of people in and around the department store. She hears the life story of the homeless street artist, who sketches while sitting in the pedway to stay out of the rain. She decides to emulate an eerily minded but warmhearted window dresser who works overtime to purchase art supplies. And she gives her beloved Modern Heroine doll to the prosperous store manager, who is bitter about having no children.
Readers will long remember this tale of a make-believe adventure that gives an impulsive sparkler insight into real-world people, problems, and possibilities.
