“That’s everything,” she declares. She steps guiltily over the unpacked suitcase. “Oh, wait! No, it isn’t!” She dashes back to the foot of the bed, where her beloved Modern Heroine doll sits on a heart-shaped, pink, satin pillow. “C’mon, Faith. Time for adventure. And yes, you can bring a few things.” She grabs several small items from the dresser top. “I’ll bring your easel, too. You can paint mermaids while I swim, okay?”
Maxzyne tucks the doll, tiny easel, painting board, and paintbrush in her tote bag. Then she makes a final sweep of the room. She scoops a delicate necklace from the dresser, dropping it into a pocket inside the bag. At the last minute, she adds the homeless woman’s painting. She carefully rolls and tucks it into the bag next to her doll.
