The detective’s mouth drops open in surprise as Mr. Tracy reaches down to accept Maxzyne’s doll. Stroking the doll’s round cheek with his fat thumb, he nods. “She’s a Modern Heroine doll, right?”
Maxzyne nods, blinking back her tears as the others watch in amazement. “Her name’s Faith, sir.” She swallows hard. “Faith Livingston, the—”
“The famous American artist who quilts and paints her political beliefs, or some such thing. At least, according to my wife, Dolores.”
Gigi laughs, clapping her hand over her own mouth. Ray gives her a warning look.
Maxzyne’s eyes widen. “You know about Faith, Mr. Tracy? Wow, that’s so cool. She’s my favorite artist in the whole world! When I grow up, I want to be just like her.”
