Elise looks confused. “A wish? Why?”
“Elise!” Maxzyne rolls her eyes, both hands on her hips. “Because it’s your special day, that’s why. On your birthday, you get one wish. It’s like a little bit of magic just for you. Make a wish, then blow out the candles, and if you’re lucky, it’ll come true.”
“But I’m not sure what to wish for.” Elise looks worried. “What do you wish for on your birthday?”
Maxzyne thinks hard, chewing the inside of her cheek. “Well, I used to wish I had a sister. But that never happened. Now I wish my dad didn’t have to work so much because he’s never home, so it’s just Mother, me, and her headaches. It would be so fun to have a . . .” She looks down, her voice trailing off.
