“Can you be whoever you want if you’re a real girl?” Elise wonders aloud.
“Mother says once I’m grownup, I can be anything—as long as I do my homework and make good grades in school. It’s just taking so long to grow up!”
“I guess if I could be anything, I’d be a writer,” Elise offers. “I really like to make up stories about people.”
“You do? Then you must have a big imagination, too. Same as me.”
“I’m always telling Peppin stories about people I see walking by the window.”
Maxzyne nods. “Hey! Did you make up a story about me?”
“I didn’t have to. I heard you wishing for a polka-dot poodle like Peppin to play with. So did Esmeralda.”
“Oh. Yeah.”
“Anyway, I watch people all day. I don’t know them, but I can make something up. Papa says that’s what writers do.”
