The two walk out of the window, letting the curtain fall into place behind them. Over by the Japanese maple tree, Maxzyne spots Ray leaning against his cart. He is talking to Ms. Mitchell. She watches him shyly offer the older woman Veronique’s delicate rose bouquet. The elegant woman’s cheeks turn pink and her eyes sparkle. Gigi skirts around the couple, but not before Maxzyne overhears Ray.
“Don’t know about you, but I’m starved after all this overtime, Lady Mitchell. Any chance you’d like to join me for a bite to eat? There’s this little place across the street. It serves a nice chicken pot pie . . .”
Ms. Mitchell beams. “Downtown Diner? Yes! And they have a lovely chicken salad. That and a pot of tea would be just perfect, wouldn’t it?” Ray offers Ms. Mitchell his arm. The two wander off toward the employee exit.
“Mission accomplished,” Gigi says under her breath, chuckling.
