“I’ll never forget you, ever, Maxzyne,” Elise promises softly.
“We’re family now, aren’t we?”
Elise grins shyly. “Promise?”
“Forever. Even if you are older than me now, you’re my best friend!” She gives her a gentle, awkward hug. Swallowing hard, she steps back. “Of course, I still have to save you from you-know-who.” She adjusts the black cap on her forehead, thinking. “You know, back there? In the ladies’ room? Gigi didn’t sound as scary as she looks. At least, not as scary as I thought she’d be, what with cutting heads off stuff and all . . .”
Her voice trails off when she sees the sick look on Elise’s face. “Sorry! Forget I said anything! Back to the parents, huh?”
