“Who—who’s there? I know you’re there! Come out!” Is someone behind her? Whipping around, she hears a scraping and shuffling noise. Where? To the right? The floor moves as the strange sound grows louder around her.
“Who are you? What do you want?” She shivers, but her hands sweat. This makes the shears hard to hold. Crouching down, she raises the shears toward the noise. “Come on! I’m not scared of—”
Choking on her words, she shrieks in terror. The shadows are moving! She can’t believe her eyes. Tall, blank-faced figures walk stiffly. They are heading right for her! Their shuffling feet crush boxes. The robot figures leave broken odds and ends everywhere. Maxzyne’s skin crawls as she watches the frightening figures.
“Chromatones!” she gasps, recalling the shadows she had pointed out to Elise earlier. Shrinking backwards, Maxzyne is trapped by the metal edge of the cutting table. She clenches the shears with both hands. However, the slick handles slide in her grip as the monster forms keep coming toward her.
“Get back! Leave me alone!” she shrieks, twisting and turning. “Go away! You’re not real! You don’t even have faces.” She waves her weapon. With a desperate lunge, she swings at the nearest one. She hits the blank-faced creature on the chest.
