“Huh? What’s up? Why’d we stop?” She looks at the metal grid overhead and hears hissing coming from somewhere. “Hello? Somebody?”
The hissing noise turns into squeaks and cranking noises. What is it? The elevator car jumps again, shuddering. Worse, the lights buzz and then fizzle out. Her eyes try to adjust to the dark.
“Okay, okay! I don’t need to be a mermaid today. No problem—just get me back to twenty-one, please? I’ll never leave the condo by myself again.” Her whispered promise becomes a wail. “C’mon! Somebody? Help!”
