“Whatever the outcome, we’ll be there for you and the girls, Carol,” my parents said,
offering their solace and support. Both my sister and Dupsey listened to my tearful tale in
shock, and then shored up my sagging spirits with encouragement. “You absolutely
cannot allow yourself to think the worst!”
I didn’t call Charles. Not yet. I wasn’t ready for his input.
That evening, after the twins were asleep, I thumbed through my copy of the Mary
Baker Eddy blue prayer book. If there was ever a definitive time to believe in God and a
Hereafter, it was now. It was also time to put my affairs in order. In a few days, I would
be in the hospital for major—perhaps life-altering—surgery.
I read and prayed and sat on my bed crying. At that moment, not being around to love
and raise my two beautiful daughters was beyond my comprehension. If I had cancer and
was given a death sentence, would Charles be able to raise them on his own? Would he
permit my family members to help him and to maintain a close relationship with them?
Would the girls forget me over time?
No! I will not accept this diagnosis! I thought. Although I hadn’t attended church for
a number of years, a deep inner faith still lived within me. I started to read.

again. One by one, I recalled all of the wonderful convictions that had sustained me over
the years, and I knew I was in God’s hands.
