I peered into Ian’s eyes. “Remember how it felt when you held your daughter for the
first time? Grandparents. Where have the years gone?”
It was difficult to keep our voices down in the restaurant and even more difficult to
finish eating when there was so much to talk about. “Take it slow, Lisa. Savor every
moment of this new journey. Before you know it, your little one won’t be so little
anymore. You are embarking on one of life’s greatest adventures. One you will never
forget.”
The weeks passed and Lisa seemed to grow lovelier. Since she was a twin and her
father-in-law was a triplet, our excitement grew with each increase in the size of her
abdomen. Her obstetrician wanted an ultrasound to check on the growth of the baby or
babies. It was hard to wait for the phone call that would assure me all was well. I tried
hard not to dwell on any of the problems I had experienced.
At about eight o’clock that evening, Lisa and Tim arrived. It didn’t take any of my
psychic intuition to see that something was amiss. This time, Ian and I could read the
concern on their faces.
“We have a dilemma,” Lisa said. She sat close to Tim and held his hand. “We’re

“The doctor couldn’t be certain,” Tim added. “There’s an unexplainable shadow
around the baby’s heart. For now, we have to forward know this is a high-risk
