Curtis was sound asleep in his room when the phone rang. He sat up, instantly awake, and grabbed the cell phone. “Yes?!” He relaxed slightly when he heard who was on the other end of the line. “Enright. I thought it was someone else. Have you got anything for me?”
Jack Enright was another Marine Curtis had served with in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, he headed up Veterans for Peace that was headquartered in Minneapolis and was living somewhere in Southeast Asia.
“It’s like you thought. Haynes is no hero.”
“What’d you find out?”
“My friend, Janice Ku, who was stationed in Cambodia at the time of the massacre, knew another soldier who was in the hotel at the time. He was one of the people who was standing guard outside the door when Senator Haynes was being interviewed by a Cambodian TV station. He saw for himself Haynes run out the door and up the stairs to the roof. He never went down to the lobby and never tried to rescue his family. It was all a lie.”
“Why didn’t the soldier ever say anything? Why didn’t anybody?”
“What was the point? It was their word against Haynes and his handlers.”
“And it still is.”
“Not quite.”
“What do you mean?”
“Word is the Cambodian cameraman who was filming the interview didn’t stop filming when he was told to. He filmed Haynes getting hysterical. He followed him as he went out of the room, ran down the hall, and took the stairs up to the roof, with his handlers close behind.”
“So, who has the video now?”
“The cameraman died a few years ago. He tried to sell the video to the highest bidder but wanted too much and didn’t have any takers. My friend’s friend thinks the cameraman’s wife has it. I’m trying to track her down through some people I know who work in a casino there.”
“Your tentacles spread far and wide.”
“I should have the video in a couple of days.”
“That fast?”
“I hate politicians worse than you do, especially a phony hero. We know people who died in war and were buried and forgotten. They were the real heroes, not this useless piece of garbage.”
“Then let’s expose the bastard and make sure he pays the price.”
“Will do. Over and out.”
They disconnected. Curtis was feeling hopeful. Maybe they could get this guy before he had a chance to come after his girls. That would be ideal. But he was prepared for any eventuality. He placed a call to Osborne in Austin to fill him in
