As I turn to leave, Theresa grabs my hand. “Do you want to meet her today?”
“I shouldn’t,” I whisper, my voice cracking.
As I open the door, I hear the sweetest voice, rivaled only by my Nozo’s. “Anata wa dare desu ka?”
Tears drip down my cheeks. How can I not turn back? Wiping my eyes, I look back to see all the lights in the room seeming to shine on a five-year-old girl. She walks toward me as I fall to my knees.
Touching my face with her tiny, chubby hands, she repeats, “Anata wa dare desu ka?”
“Boku wa . . .” I pause, holding her hands, and try again. “Boku wa nobody desu.”
