The Winding

Science Fiction & Fantasy

Would you change reality for love?

Morally complex, orphan, and absolute genius Vincent Abajian is hellbent to uncover all he can on Artificial Intelligence. His relentless pursuit distracts him from a traumatic childhood loss—his childhood best friend Akane was engulfed in a time-turbulence, a random rift in space and time.

But when a beautiful, temperamental, post-doctoral scientist, Emika Amari, joins his Center, everything changes. Vincent is convinced that Akane is inside the irresistible Emika. As they begin a life together, Vincent’s past and his connection with a time turbulence survivor challenge everything they’ve created and push them into a spiral of politics and conspiracy. Vincent’s silence to protect Emika threatens to tear them apart. Unknowingly, Emika is torn between what she wants and what Akane wants from her. With his newfound power, Vincent struggles with whether or not he should create another time-turbulence to free Emika from the grasp of Akane once and for all. But will tinkering with time be more destructive than anything he has ever encountered before?

Enter Philip Nardin

Philip Nardin is a significant character in the entire series. This is Vincent's first introduction of him. (At least that's what he remembers). I chose the name as a homage to watch brands--Patek Philippe, Ulysses Nardin.

Enter Emika

The robin flies away. A young woman enters, folding her transparent umbrella. She is shimmering in the sunlight. It’s the same image I saw outside Headmaster Kruger’s office on November 23, 1991. The same song was in the background. Every strand of hair on my arms and neck rises as I see the spitting image of Akane in front of me. Has she come back? Did she find me? And there she is, smiling. That smile—I never thought I’d see it again.

“Dr. Abajian? Did you mean it when you said that politicians can be replaced with algorithms?” she asks, squinting at me. I smile. “Yes. And it doesn’t have to be a complicated one either.”

This gives an insight to what Akane meant to Vincent. And why Akane's possessions are close to Vincent. He carried those items as he moved from Switzerland, to the UK and finally to the US, across three decades.

Today (Episode 1)

August 15, 2024 is a fixed time in this book--also referred to as today. There are three such chapters. The first one is chapter 1, the second one appears in in the middle of the book and the last one in chapter 19. The whose story revolves around August 15. Hope you enjoy it.

I am nobody!

After removing Akane from his reality, Vincent travels back in time to see her parents. He then encounters a five years old Akane. Curiously she asks, "Who are you (Anata wa dare desuka?") And Vincent not wanting her to have his name resonate, says "I am nobody" (This has had a profound impact on Akane across realities)

Enter Vandal

I created Vandal as a Menacing Villain with a troubling past. I wanted the readers not to hate him.

Vincent and Akane in Kiyo Mizudera

When I visited This place in Kyoto, I felt time stopped. And so I made this location constant across realities. Not kisy the loctaion but also a prayer plaque (calle Ema)
