Amidst the distant thunder, joyful laughter echoed from the lake, where neighbors enjoyed the warmth and precious moments with their families. A dog barked against a backdrop of lapping water. The fresh scent of pine trees and lilacs, mingling with a faint aroma of cut grass, caused a slight stinging sensation in my nose.
I put aside my musings and glanced at Noah, scrolling on his tablet with a smirk curling his lips. His champagne-curly hair and amber eyes glistened under the patio lights.
A foreboding presence lurked nearby. I couldn’t say I liked the times I could sense danger. But my senses became more acute when I sensed otherworldly energy. They penetrated every fiber of my being, creating a powerful sensation.
Then, a harsh grinding and banging sound echoed in the twilight.
“Get a grip,” I spoke out loud.
“What? What was that sound?” Noah’s head jerked up, and he tilted to acknowledge my outburst.
