The glass hotel was stunning. It had modern twentieth-century furniture with bright-colored walls. Humanoids whizzed around the hotel as they escorted Sophia to a first-floor condo suite. After checking into the hotel, Sophia pulled the cell from her purse and tapped the number for Brad, her assistant, but the automated service answered the call.
“Brad, I have arrived in Texas. Call me when you have a chance.” She ended the call.
Sophia was eager to meet with the new mayor of Romala. And reassure him of her pledge to stay two weeks or until she found a workable solution. Her headache increased with intensity. She popped two pills into her mouth, grabbed a water bottle, and exited the condo. She hailed a hovercraft, which stopped.
“Let me help you with your bag, Dr. McFadden.”
She glanced at the slender man inside and grinned. “Thank you, but I will keep my attaché. How do you know me?”
“Doctor, they briefed us this morning.”
“I see. City Hall, please.” So, people are aware of her arrival. But his cheery smile unnerved her, and someone had individuals watching her movements.
Without another word, he opened the door for her, dashed to the front, and pressed the console screen as the hovercraft lifted and sped off toward the town center.
“Do you want me to wait for you once you finish your business?”
“No, I will find a ride back. Thanks.”
“I didn’t know the city hall was six blocks from the hotel. I could have walked.”
“No, doctor. They instructed me to fly you to your meeting.”
“Oh.” Someone sent him to scare me. She reasoned.
