A shadow sneaked through the gloomy streets; lighting again exploded across the boundary. Becky turned her head in the sound’s direction when she spotted a charred body lying on the pavement. Panic throbbed through her spirit — a loud chuckle echoed in the night. “Beware, Ms. Weinman.”
Becky glanced once again toward the spot where the carcass lay and suspected the robot police in the vicinity. Gunfire blasted; she trembled, a scream, and a boom echoed in the twilight.
“She’s dead. Discard in the pit,” said a garbled voice.
Becky scrambled to her hovercraft and sped off toward her home, as impressions of her existence before the rapture flooded her mind.
She stared out of the window to witness the aurora borealis as it glided across the sky while spectators observe the site in astonishment. During the last three years, lightning strikes became more deadly, and flashes could appear out of nowhere and strike humans in their path. Bolt lighting strikes didn’t affect AI robots, and it puzzled humans. The orange craft, she recalled — and it troubled her as it oscillated along the skyline. She had to warn Bart.
Becky landed on her driveway pad when a whirring sound of the robot police echoed. “Geez,” she hated them. She hopped out of the vehicle; the law approached the garage bay.
“May I see the night approval pass, Miss Weinman?”
She squinted into the blaring blue eyes of the ten-foot intelligent Being as he pointed his enormous automatic AK47-attached XM-25 grenade launcher at her as if to shoot. The aggressive advance terrified her.
The robots understood human intentions — ruthless and frightening in their approach toward mortals. Their voices strong and raspy, and their machinery was fearsome. “Why, sure? Here.”
“Do I frighten you, Ms. Weinman?”
His steely blue eyes fastened to her gaze as he scanned her body. He scrutinized the 3D image and photographed it into his memory chip.
“Thank you, Miss Weinman. Next time secure a pass for prolonged hours or get fined or the electronic pool overnight. This infraction is a warning. Goodnight.”
The police vehicle lifted off the ground and zipped toward the city’s direction.
