Behind Loving Hands Baptist Church, is the Loving Hands cemetery where the remains of most of the community’s deceased have been buried. The cemetery backs up to a densely wooded forest belonging to the US Steel Corporation. Between the cemetery and the forest is a small cove, the scene of a rumored tragedy where two lovers were brutally murdered by a jealous husband named Lester. Although there is no record of such an event or evidence to prove its authenticity, the story of Lester’s Revenge in Lovers Cove inevitably resurfaces every Halloween. And those who tell the story claim that Lester’s ghost still hovers over the cove waiting with his axe for the next young lovers who dare enter his domain.
Although very few locals willingly acknowledge that they believe the story to be true, few of them have ever attempted to visit the cove at night. But this night was different because someone had pulled onto the dirt road that leads to Lovers Cove.
A gray pickup truck slowly bounced its way over the road, entered the cove, and then parked under a grove of trees by the cemetery. Moments later a second vehicle entered the dirt road stopping short of the clearing. A woman emerged from the car, slipped on a hooded jacket, and turned on a tiny flashlight while continuing her journey on foot.
Once at the entrance to the cove she turned off the flashlight and took cover behind a tangled growth of wild bushes. Aided by the light of a full moon, she stared across the field at the parked vehicle while the sound of laughter and intimate behavior echoed across the clearing. Then suddenly, she retreated to her car and speedily exited the forest.
