The cafeteria walls were painted with the same flat white as the exterior walls of the building. It looked and felt very sterile. The food was served from stainless steel bins onto stainless steel trays and carried over to stainless steel tables. The scientists, journalists, and other employees of the research center wore lab coats and sat on long, stainless steel benches that were attached to the tables, eating their cordon bleu or veggie burgers, depending on preference. Everyone was eating and chatting naturally, nonchalant except for Jeremy, who played with his food and stared at Marija. For her part, Marija was completely oblivious, chatting with Hugo about what it was like to work under his father and how life was for a young man on a tropical island surrounded by the wealthy and elderly.
Jeremy continued staring longingly at Marija.
