Hiding From Christmas: Off-the-Grid Christmas Book 1

Romance

Hiding from Christmas (Off the Grid Christmas Book 1)

He’s been hiding from the world since he lost his family in a brutal attack.

She’s just hiding from her family for the holidays.

What happens when they find each other?

Elle

I couldn’t face the piteous glances of my family over the holidays after my fiancé Austin unceremoniously dumped me. I was too tame, too awkward, too vanilla, too risk averse. Glad he took five years to figure that out.

I’m devastated. Humiliated. And angry. I told Mom I couldn’t bear the thought of coming home for the holidays. I’d rather be alone. Anything was better than their sympathy, but my own company didn’t promise to be any better. That’s why I jumped at the chance to visit my eccentric aunt Muriel in a remote village on the West coast of Mexico.

Joe

No one would call my solitary life here uncomplicated, but on the surface it’s simple enough. After seven years in exile, I’m used to my routine and my solitude, though my grief walks beside me like a silent companion. As much as I might like to go back to my old life, I could never put the people I trust, love and depend upon at risk.

Never again.

I’m regularly reminded that the cost would be too high. Especially this time of year when a cruel gift arrives from my nemesis. My sixth Christmas alone in Mexico. The anniversary of the date I lost everything.

I’m expecting the package, right on schedule. But I’m not expecting the clumsy, beautiful, bewildering blonde that crashes into my world and turns it inside out.

Phoenix

My high school years were as grim and gritty as could be, so when the opportunity to disappear presented itself, I grabbed it with both fists and didn’t look back. Ten years later, I’ve mellowed and I’m searching for a place to put down roots, craving the friends I left behind, and the family and home I never had. What I didn’t expect? To reunite with my high school crush Jeannie. Turns out she’s got a little baggage of her own that throws a big curve in my plans

She wants nothing to do with me, an embarrassing reminder of her biggest mistake. I see this as a gift, an opportunity to have everything I’m looking for and more. And ten years in the special forces has given me the confidence, determination and skills to get whatever I want. I’m not giving up until I get it.

Jeannie

Now, the last accomplishment that will take me back where I belong is finally within reach. What I don’t expect when I finally return to my hometown? To reconnect with the guy I thought I’d never, and I mean never, see again. Why? Because he was dead.

Backyard Heartache (Before You Knew Me): Having it All Book 3

Romance

Sometimes moving into a new future requires letting go of the past. If two clashing agents of change can change they way they see each other – they might just change the world for good, and build a beautiful future together.   Attorney Sharon Beckett worked hard to lift her life out of the gutter. Her shameful scandalous past keeps her out of the limelight and firmly on the side of the establishment. And nothing else. In her mind, a pro-bono case for a skid row non-profit is the opposite of career advancement, but she’ll do what she must to climb that last corporate rung. Passionate and angry social worker Kent Sawyer is determined to save troubled street kids by opening a much-needed shelter. But getting development approval depends on forging an unlikely alliance with a beautiful cold-hearted ice princess. Scandal-averse Sharon, assigned to Kent’s project, could take on corrupt city officials and greedy developers to help him succeed, but she won’t. Until secrets from her past surface, and a dark turn of events forces her hand. Can Sharon and Kent put their differences aside and learn to work together for the greater good, or will Kent’s dreams of righting the past by brightening the future implode before they even break ground?

Kent shows Sharon around the DES

In this chapter (still a draft) passionate social worker Kent Sawyer reluctantly shows lawyer Sharon Beckett around his haunt - the downtown east side - the skid row of Vancouver, where the lines between his clients, his friends, and his haunted past blur. Resenting her involvement with the society's project, he's motivated to make her as uncomfortable as possible. As they get to know each other, they're both in for surprises. Before You Knew Me will be released soon, Spring 2020. Stay tuned. Subscribe to my author newsletter to be notified of new releases, deals and giveaways.

Sneak Peak from Nanowrimo Project Backyard Heartac

A little Christmas present for you: a sneak peak and introduction to the characters in my WIP project from this year's National Novel Writing Month. This is chapter two, so you get tossed into the beginnings of conflict between these very two different characters, Sharon (an uptight lawyer you will remember if you've read my Reconcilable Differences novel) and a wounded social worker named Kent Sawyer. I plan to have this book available later in 2019. Enjoy! And Happy Holidays.

Reconcilable Differences: A Having It All Novel

Literature & Fiction

Kate is a survivor. Fifteen years after her breakdown, Kate has built a successful career as a family mediator, specializing in couple’s reconciliation. In fact, she’s about to receive a prestigious award for her accomplishments. Her latest mediation brings together a young couple on the brink of divorce, and only Kate’s expertise and sensitivity can save them. It also, unexpectedly, reconnects her with former lover Simon Sharpe, who represents the high and the low points of her life, uncomfortably forcing her to revisit her difficult and painful past. Still haunted by her unrequited love, Simon’s reemergence in Kate’s life exhumes memories of trauma and heartbreak, along with unwanted feelings of insecurity and self-doubt she believed were long resolved. As Simon and Kate steer their feuding, secretive clients towards reconciliation and navigate their confusing past, their own relationship reignites and takes them on an unexpected path.

The Other Guy

Reconcilable Differences is now available digitally from Kobo, iBooks, Nook and other online vendors and lenders worldwide. *** This is a scene where you get to know the man that Kate has been dating for the last two years. The one that gets cast aside as Kate reignites her relationship with her first love Simon. It was hard to write because, he had to be a good-enough guy that Kate found him interesting and worthy in the first place, but somehow flawed, at least from Kate's perspective, so that she could justify leaving him. The answer lay in creating a character who, though he may have his own issues, is fundamentally a bad match for Kate, despite all his good qualities. In the end, it was hard to hurt him, because he truly loves Kate. (I hope his heartbreak makes you cry a little.) The good news is, Jay gets his own story later in the Having It All series. And it's a doozy! I have it planned out, and can hardly wait to write it. It's called When Morning Comes.

Falling in Love with Flawed Characters

I read this excerpt aloud at last weekend's inaugural Indie Author Event at my local library in Vancouver. This is a critical scene that I revised very late in the process of writing this book for a very important reason. My character Kate is deeply troubled by long lasting effects resulting from a trauma earlier in her life. I had kept this reason for her anxiety a secret until much later in the book. But a very insightful editor asked me: Why was I withholding this important fact about Kate? At that point in the endless revision process, I didn't have a good answer. I've learned something important about the characters in the stories we love to read about. What makes us willing to suspend disbelief and invest the time and emotional energy necessary to hang in there for 3 or 400 pages? We have to LOVE them. We have to CARE about them and root for them. And to show you that Kate is worth caring about, you need to understand why she is suffering from anxiety attacks, self-doubt, and why it's so difficult for her to give herself her own HEA. In this scene I let you eavesdrop on an intimate conversation between Kate and her BFF Alexa. All defenses are down and the truth is revealed.

Print books available now!

This chapter shows Kate and Simon getting closer, then crossing a line into a taste of the trouble that's coming. Intrigued? Want to read more? Print books are now available through Amazon online, Chapters Indigo online, and through Ingram Spark's distribution network, rolling out over the next few weeks, as well as through Indiebound. Kate makes her case to the society

When Kate's career is on the line, she has to get tough with herself and her emotional frailty. She realizes that letting Simon go might just be what she has to do. She also realizes she's strong enough to do it if it turns out to be the right thing.

Kate's first anxiety attack

This is the first time Kate has an anxiety attack in years. She realizes that Simon's return has opened old wounds, and that it might interfere with her work. She has to deal with her past in order to carry on with the important mediation case, and to move on with her life.

the middle of chapter one

I chose this fragment because, without trying to tell the whole story, it encapsulates the heroine's situation and identity at the beginning of the story. She's caught between her past and the future she wants, and this moment in time, just before the hero enters, exposes the lies she tells herself about her present.

Book Bubbles from Disruption by Design: Having it All: Book 2

Coming About…

Here's an excerpt that includes part of a sailing day, when Bruce takes Alexa and the kids out on his beautiful sailboat and temporary home, Belle Etoile (which means Beautiful Star and refers to an old fairy tail involving a quest.) This excerpt ends with the words, "Coming About!" In sailing terms, this means changing direction, via a tack or as Wikipedia defines it: "Tacking or coming about is a sailing maneuver by which a sailing vessel, whose desired course is into the wind, turns its bow toward the wind so that the direction from which the wind blows changes from one side to the other, allowing progress in the desired direction." In common usage, it also means "to come to pass, to happen." It seems to me in both cases to suggest forward progress and change, whether in a sailboat or a person's life. Originally I intended the book to be titled Coming About. Later I thought it was rather too common a phrase to grab attention, but it still encapsulates the idea of the book, or really any story about any character who is at a turning point, a crossroads in their life where choices must be made about future directions. Where one leaves the past behind and boldly heads off in a new direction. Read more on my blog.

A Dark Moment

This excerpt, from Chapter 25, is a short reading I did during a recent workshop to illustrate the dark moment, just at the point when the hero and heroine separate. Of course the dark moment is a long time coming, and there are several scenes leading up to and following this that anticipate the climax of the book. But this little scene, in Bruce's Point of View, but with Alexa doing most of the talking, does a good job of showing you where each of them are in their thinking. I hope you find it intriguing, and buy the book to read about how they got here, and what happens afterwards! Click the buy links now to find out.

50% Discount Limited Time

There's always been sexual chemistry between these two, but their clashing personalities and lifestyles make that a non-starter. Here's a scene where for the first time they dig a little deeper and get to know the other person in a way they never have before. It doesn't do their chemistry any harm, but does lead to some confusion. Disruption by Design is discounted for two more days. $1.99 in the US and equivalent in all worldwide markets. If you're intrigued, now is your chance to get a copy of this emotionally compelling book and read on. What will it take to break down the defensive barriers Alexa and Bruce have built around their hearts?

Do opposites attract...

Or is that a myth? In the case of Alexa and Bruce, long-time reluctant acquaintances because their best-friends are married to each other, it's definitely a love-hate thing. Any undercurrents of intrigue and sexual chemistry are far outweighed by the massive irritation factors. But what choice do they have when their friends need their help? What is the price of sacrifice, when love is the prize? Can a few chaotic weeks playing house convince lonely, defensive Bruce and fiercely independent Alexa to let down their guard and make room for love?

Disruption by Design out Jan. 1, 2018!

Here's a revised version of the inciting incident after final revisions prior to publication. Disruption by Design, book 2 in the Having it All series, is available for pre-purchase now until January 1, when it is officially release. Available on Amazon, Kobo, iBooks and through a wide variety of digital and online print booksellers. If you can't find it, request it via ISBN from your local indie bookseller.

At 23, Sophie had yet to learn whom she could trust. With life spinning in unexpected directions, Sophie anchors herself to the shabby but quaint Aviary Hotel in York, as the new night desk clerk. Navigating complexities and roadblocks, she applies her energy and spirit to the old-world hotel and the labyrinthine lives of the eccentric but lovable staff, guests and locals. Sophie begins to trust her internal compass once drawn into the tragic life of hotel owner, Ava Roxtoby, whose obsession with birds, both living and dead, may be an important link to the past. Ultimately, a surprise hotel guest provides an important road-sign, leaving Sophie to decide if she needs a guiding hand, or whether she’s ready to chart her own course.

Rough-Cut Book Bubbles from A Dissimulation of Doves

Chapter two

A Dissimulation is one of, if not the, favorite of my books. This is a completed manuscript that won first place in the New Adult category of the Chatelaine Prize from Chanticleer Book Reviews. The book's not published yet because I'm considering some rewrites that would make it an even stronger book. This piece gives a taste of the main character Sophie, her predicament and gives some flavor of the place - York - where she is stranded.
