Rough-Cut Book Bubbles from Aspen Autumn

A poem about the changing of the leaves in autumn.

The magic of the aspens turning from green to gold happens almost overnight. I sat in an aspen stand one day in 2016 and literally watched the change. It inspired me to write this poem.

Learning of Elemental Magic

Erinwe Diomhair is a kit, a knight-in-training. She has followed her master, the Shadowyn monk Davius Rhill, on an inquiry about elemental magic. She and her master find themselves in a tavern in Shyne, a small village in the Clan of Scoth. The monk asks about elemental magic, but the waitress seems to disregard the question. Until later, that is...

Kidnapping a fallen knight

Sir Rommen Ryke, once a proud knight of Bregainne, is now just a dirty drunkard. He's lost his home, and worse, his son. Now, three greycoat soldiers masquerading as Voronith coat merchants are planning to use him to get to his son, Zanevon Ryke, the supposed boy with spirit-sight.

Urchin in the under-Shyne

Zane has crept from the sewer to watch this drunken bum. Why?

The Fallen God returns, seeking revenge.

This passage comes at the end of my prologue, revealing Draull, the Fallen God, escaping the Void. His ascension on the higher planes has begun. Only a ragged boy from the sewers of a small village has the power to stop Him. The forces of Light, Darkness, and Shadow converge, with the fate of Creation hanging in the balance.

A body.

Zane travels the sewers of Shyne to get from place to place. Even down there, he can't completely avoid trouble, but he uses his magic to make the go easier. In this scene, he is headed somewhere in particular, and rising from the sewers he finds what he is seeking...a body.

The Void

Draull is a Fallen God. After destroying the heavenly world of Tiela, the Creator banished him to the seventh and lowest plane, known only as the Void. For ages uncounted Draull has remained in the dark, alone, brooding, plotting his revenge against the Heavens. Only the Septenaria, the seven elements of magic, protected the material plane of Eilean Reul from the Fallen God's wrath, but Draull's followers destroyed those fabled jewels centuries ago. Now, a near-orphan with a curse of spirit-sight must gather seven new elemental adepts and try to prevent the destruction of the world.
