Overcoming the Emotional Stigmas of Infertility: Barren but Not Ashamed

Biographies & Memoirs

Overcoming the Emotional Stigmas of Infertility: Barren but Not Ashamed is Frances Jones' inspiring and profoundly touching memoir that discusses her over 20-year journey of barrenness. Frances shares the various disappointing events that led her to accept a mindset of defeat and embrace a myriad of negative emotions and stigmas that took power over her life for a period of time. She appeared happy, carefree, strong, and confident. But, within, she hid behind a mask of shame, pain, hurt, self-ridicule and constant disappointment that wasn’t evident to many people, including those closest to her.

Her hopes and dreams of having children, like many of the women in her family, had become desolate. She constantly wore a "damaged goods" label that presented itself with each disappointing realization. Along with that label came discouragement, self-pity, isolation, anger, sadness, loneliness, hurt, and embarrassment. The desire to rise above her situation sent Frances on a discovery journey allowing her to look deep within, rediscovering who she was and why her experience with infertility was purposeful. The process was very empowering for Frances. Through it, she learned that her journey was not just about herself. It was to help others who are suffering as well. The concept of being grateful for all things has a greater meaning for Frances. It all made sense. Instead of focusing on pain and disappointments, she learned the importance of being thankful for every part of her life, including her journey with infertility.

Frances explains how she overcame infertility's stigmas and reclaims the power she’d previously relinquished, allowing her to heal within and ultimately remove the mask that kept her afraid and reluctant to speak openly about her truth. Not only was she able to move beyond the damaging effect of her circumstances, but Frances also recognized the good in it.
