Asking Holland out on a date
I love this scene in so many ways. Holland has stress and grief sitting on her shoulders and we don't get to see her be a typical teen yet. In this scene, Tate is showing her how interested he is in her by buying her the book. In my line of thinking, a guy who buys a book for a girl is a GREAT GUY! Once he has asked her out and she gets back into the car, I love her reaction. It is the same kind me and my best friend have had many times over. I love how she screams and Sam is all moody in the back seat. The text in the end, it gives me the 'ahhh' moment.
Fantasy fulfilling
In this scene, Holland had just been thinking about some serious things that had just happened to her. Now that Tate has arrived, we get a glimpse into the teenager in her. The flirting with Tate is innocent, but their chemistry is beginning to heat up. The junk food - I put in all the junk my kids like to eat. The Dove chocolates? They're all me! I love them!
New Mother
This scene is loosely based on watching my daughter with her newborn daughter and them loading the car as they left the hospital.
First Kiss
Oh how I love first kiss scenes! Holland hasn't had time to worry about guys, so this is monumental for her. Tate is a gentleman and in this scene he is much like my own husband. I love that Tate opens her door, it is a dying expression of respect. I try to make my male characters the kind of guy the reader wants to date. I want to scream, DON'T SETTLE! find the guy who respects you.
Shut the front door.
In this scene, I wanted to show the reader how out of touch she has been since her friend died. It shows how innocent she is and how naive Holland can be.
The song
I've always loved the Fugees version on this song, so I knew it would be mentioned in the book somewhere. Holland has such a hard life, I wanted her to fall for Tate and have her life improve. This song is both sensual and emotional, two things that explain their relationship. Tate's reaction to it made my heart smile as I wrote it.
