    I know the author. That made me a bit concerned about reading his first novel. I am glad that I didn't listen to myself.     I loved the main character, Nem. I loved the magic system, which has rules about energy usage and the dangers of magic. Basically, it draws on your life force and you can kill yourself using it, so you tap into the life force of plants, animals, etc. or wait until your batteries recharge. Dragons are played up as the most powerful creatures in this setting, and the main character has a deep association with them. Of course, he has a quest and a magic sword, but there are also pirates, cannons, and seers.

    The plot is good and the action is at a nice clip. I enjoyed it greatly and highly recommend it.

    I am not a fan of having multiple povs, I just cant get invested in more than 2 or 3 characters. But I actually enjoyed most if the povs here. I only activeley skipped Ervins 4 or so chapters in arow. Otherwise this was a very enjoyable book.
