A. For this story, I decided to lock up the internal critic that told me, "No, don't write that, that's stupid." I wanted to write the most ridiculous story that I possibly could. A time travel burrito story with a cat pretty much covered the stupid quota. The rest of the story just fell into place.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2017Yes, Pete is shallow and incredibly stupid but well developed for all that. I hope Unk finds another way to prank people in modern times -- his current way is a bit gross!
This was one of the funniest books I have read in a very long time. Ignore the fact that time travel doesn't exist and Neanderthals were not found in the "New World", it's a very "possible" book. Ignoring the first is easy since you know you're reading science fiction and time travel is one of the more popular sub-genres of sci-fi. The second is a little harder to ignore but Unk is needed for the story and, for someone who doesn't talk, he's as well developed as he can be. He does adapt and stays with Pete.
The way Mishaka, Pete and Unk block the wedding of Clara and the Professor (mild spoiler but you want the wedding stopped so it's not a big deal) was a little hard to swallow. If they made the change in 1972, why did the wedding get as far as it did before it just changed?
Yes, there were some odd points but over all, it was a very fun to read book. I like Lion. It takes a while reading to find out why there's a cat standing on that burrito on the cover.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2022Pete has a problem - he can't cook edible burritos (unless you're a starving student then one can choke them down!)
Pete's food truck is a disaster on wheels until he trips over a brilliant lab worker after a lab accident, sending him on multiple trips through time searching for the ingredients and the skills to create the perfect burrito.
You'll have to read the book to understand why biscuit kneading lion is crucial to creating the burrito.
I found it hard to get involved in the story at first - but it was a very enjoyable read.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2023Pete is a very simple man whose life goal is to make a perfect burrito. His life is turned upside down when he gets sucked up by a time travel experiment gone wrong. That doesn't change his primary goal at all, though.
This book is an absurdist time travel adventure, which means what is most important is for the reader to have fun. Which I didn't have, not at the beginning at least.
Most of the jokes in the first half were centered on Pete being very stupid and they weren't particularly funny. While I was slightly interested in the story and the other main character's POV, I decided to DNF as it felt like a waste of my time. I would have been fine continuing with an audiobook, but there isn't one. Then I got the idea of trying to use text-to-speech and finish the book that way (The AI emotionless voice kind of worked with the absurdity of the story). And I am kind of glad I did.
The second part was way better. Pete stopped being just the dumb guy to make jokes about and gets acknowledged as a useful part of the group. Consequently, I started having more fun with the book and actually enjoyed the jokes too. Somewhere along the way, the characters grew on me and I started to care about the story.
Also, the cat is indeed part of the story, although it appears only toward the end, and it's super cute.
This book is part of a series, but works as a standalone.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2023Reads like it was written in less time than it takes to read it. Still, it's mighty entertaining. Plot elements like archaeology, physics, and psychology will work best for readers who have no knowledge of those subjects. The author demonstrates a passing familiarity with burritos, cats, and Metallica. It's not so bad it's good. It's so bad it's forgivable, and you don't find that every day. Sort of recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017Ike, you may rest safe, your crown as Sci Fi's king is secure. HOWEVER your ability to write a light-hearted "just for the fun of it" book may be in peril. There is very little science explained in the story. As a matter of fact I'm still pretty pissed that we don’t KNOW what the secret ingredient is. Personally I'm pulling for Dino Dung. Come on think about UNK's sense of humour, and the area in which our hero finds himself, and "the spice", There were a LOT of ancillary characters entering the story, some of whom you felt you knew some of whom you wish you could shower our intrepid travellers, soon after their meeting.
My only real complaint is that Pete doesn’t really grow much through the story. I mean in a book where there are no LESS than 20 809's - 90's references from pop culture, the ONLY thing that Pete discovers, is his satisfaction in creating the GREATEST burrito truck in history. Oh yeah, and the ever present, money isn’t everything
But I think THAT’S what we were all wai5ting for. Its the one lesson from that era that ALWAYS shines through.
All in all great job.Write some more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burritos rule apparently!
Overall a well placed and unusual concept that has silly humour and even provides some history that goes down easily. Escapes time and reality and provides a good read for lazy days. Not for the serious hearted although maybe they should read it and get less serious. Also has a cat that doesn't sit on the mat but makes tortillas instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relax and Enjoy
I nominated this book on Kindle Scout as I had read 'Othello and Zombies' by the same author and really liked it. Unfortunately it wasn't a winner. There's no accounting for taste, is there?
Thoroughly enjoyable time travel tale which keeps you glued to the page from the word go. Loved the cover - makes me smile every time I look at it.
The characters are fully defined, the story is well told and absorbing, the humour is great, and this is FUN!
After having a rubbish week, this was exactly what the doctor ordered.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inane and crass
I hate giving a negative review because I don’t want to be mean. I read 20% of the book in the hope that it would get better. Time travel is a favourite of mine.
But it got worse. Juvenile potty humour, one of the main characters with the IQ of a turnip, and another that felt it was important to repeatedly remind us of her sexual orientation.

3.0 out of 5 stars A slow start but worth persevering
I found the first third of the book to be a bit of a struggle - the characters weren't particularly likeable and the humour seemed forced. After that the author seemed to settle into the story better, and the flow improved. It never reached laugh-out-loud levels of funny, but the did have a nice level of absurdist humour. We also learned more about the main characters and they became more likeable - I would say the introduction of Misako is where it starts to gel. Overall, it became a fun read without ever being great.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cat-alogue of disasters.
All Pete wants to do is make the purrfect burrito but after a cat-astrophe in a nearby lab he sets out, unwittingly, on the adventure of many lifetimes.
With the help of a few friends he picks up along the timeline can Pete realise his dream, or will they end up in the Kitty litter?
Funny, very funny. A great mix of characters, especially the lion. It's good that there's an opening been left for another book as I think there is room in the world for more burritos.
