Mink Eyes (Peter O'Keefe Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 121 ratings

October 1986—the tarnished heart of the “Greed is Good” decade.

Private detective Peter O’Keefe is a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet. Hired by his childhood best friend, ace attorney Mike Harrigan, O’Keefe investigates what appears to be merely a rinky-dink mink farm Ponzi scheme in the Ozarks. Instead, O’Keefe finds himself snared in a vicious web of
money laundering, cocaine smuggling, and murder—woven by a mysterious mobster known as “Mr. Canada.” Also caught in Mr. Canada’s web is the exquisite Tag Parker, who might be the girl of O’Keefe’s dreams—or his nightmares.

Review

"Mink Eyes is a must-read for action enthusiasts. Peter is the perfect protagonist for the story. He is jaded enough to keep his head in the game and open-minded enough to look for clues where no one in their right minds would look. He is a unique and surprisingly charismatic character... Reading this story is a whole sensory experience and that is largely due to the craftsmanship of the author. Dan Flanigan weaves pictures with his words... descriptions are vivid, the imagery is expressive and the dialogues are revealing. An easy read that I will pick up again." 5-Star Reader's Favorite Review
"...a wonderful read...Be prepared to clear your day before you start to read because once you do,
it is hard to walk away from this book." A.L.

"
Fast paced, action-packed...vivid imagery..." K.G.

"He paints pictures that make it easy to get lost in the story." A.L.

"In a category filled with formulaic and predictable characters and plot lines,
Mink Eyes was unique and unexpected. It is a love story and somewhat of a 'coming of age' tale too, a serious literary work in an exciting 'thriller' package." B.N.

"...please, give us another installment quickly..." R.B.S.

Dan Flanigan is a novelist, playwright, poet, and practicing lawyer. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Rice University and J.D. from the University of Houston. He taught Jurisprudence at the University of Houston and American Legal History at the University of Virginia. His first published book was his Ph.D. dissertation, The Criminal Law of Slavery and Freedom, 1800-1868.

He moved on from academia to serve the civil rights cause as a school desegregation lawyer, followed by a long career as a finance attorney in private law practice. He became a name partner in the Polsinelli law firm in Kansas City, created its Financial Services practice, chaired its Real Estate & Financial Services Department for two decades, and established the firm’s New York City office and served as its managing partner until October 2022. His legal bio may be viewed at the Polsinelli website.

Taking a break from the law practice for two years, he and his wife, Candy, founded Sierra Tucson, a prominent alcohol and drug treatment center located in Tucson, Arizona.

Recently, he has been able to turn his attention to his lifelong ambition—creative writing. Since 2019, Dan has published four novels in his award-winning Peter O’Keefe detective series, a poetry collection titled Tenebrae: A Memoir of Love and Death about the illness and death of his wife of 43 years, and a collection of short fiction called Dewdrops.

Dan has also written stage plays including Secrets (based on the life of Karl Marx’s youngest daughter, Eleanor) and Moondog’s Progress (loosely based on the “founder” of rock ‘n roll, disc jockey Alan Freed). His novella, Dewdrops, was originally written for the stage and enjoyed a full-cast staged reading at the Theatre of the Open Eye in New York.

Dan serves on the Board of Directors of Childhood USA, the U.S. arm of the World Childhood Foundation, established by Queen Silvia of Sweden, working to end child sexual abuse and exploitation everywhere. He divides his time among Kansas City, New York City, and Los Angeles, and, whenever possible, visits the Catskills in New York and the San Juan Islands (off the coast of Washington state), as well as the Gulf Islands, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

Author Dan Flanigan is a novelist, poet, and playwright, and now adds screenwriter to his resume as he prepares the screenplay of this fine novel MINK EYES. Dan practices law and his insights into legal aspects of this novel assure veracity of viewpoint.

The author has an extraordinary flair for creating memorable characters and for placing them in credible settings that proliferate into situations that morph into surprises. His main character Peter O’Keefe becomes visible in the opening portion of the story – ‘As he always did when he wasn’t hungover, O’Keefe forced himself into his gym shorts, T-shirt, socks, and tennis shoes and moved through the dark apartment toward his exercise room, believing that this was yet another decision, however small and seemingly insignificant, in favor of life against death, like the times in Vietnam when he had fought off sleep on guard duty. The little men in black pajamas, the little men who never slept, were just waiting for you to doze of so they cold creep into your hole and quietly, and ever so gently, cut your throat. The apartment occupied the entire bottom floor of an old Victorian house in a re-gentrifying neighborhood. He could sense, though he could not see, Kelly [his daughter] sleeping on the fold-out couch in the living room. She was spending the weekend with him – she under his care, he under hers. The child will save you, he thought.’

Weaving a main character’s life through the gauze of memories and flashbacks of the Vietnam War brings chilling reality to this fine novel. The story is well distilled in the author’s synopsis – ‘The year is 1986--the tarnished heart of the decade of greed. Private detective Peter O'Keefe, a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet, is hired by childhood friend and attorney Mike Harrigan to investigate what appears to be a petty mink farm Ponzi scheme in the Ozarks. Quickly O'Keefe finds himself snared in a vicious web of money laundering, cocaine smuggling, and murder--all at the behest of a mysterious mobster only referred to as Mr. Canada. Also caught up in Mr. Canada's illicit network is the exquisite Tag Parker, who seems to dance between roles as the woman of O'Keefe's dreams--and his nightmares.’

And that is the barest outline of the thrilling venture this book reveals. Dan Flanigan has proven his gifts as a poet and short story composer and author of two plays, but this novel focuses a spotlight on his important position as a significant contemporary literary figure. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 19

Mink Eyes by Dan Flanigan is an engaging mystery/detective novel that delivers on a well-thought out plot that is replete with intrigue, suspense and gruesome murders.

The story takes place in the early 1980's and our hero, a Vietnam Veteran by the name of Peter O'Keefe takes center stage. His war-time experience serves him well as he enters into civilian life. Unfortunately, memories continue to create devastating effects on his personal life that spill over into his relationships.

His chosen career path is that of a private eye or detective. He is skilled and therefore enjoys great success in this line of business, but not even this success can satisfy the emptiness within. In fact, he is so successful that he has instructed his staff not to take any more contracts for a month.

However, something intriguing comes to the attention of the detective agency. A potential client shares with O'Keefe that an employee is missing who has been supervising an unusual venture. The employee has not been seen or heard from for almost a month and the bank account to run the operation is void of cash. To make matters even more engaging is the fact that this money-making venture is, of all things, the running of Prosperity Farms, Inc. that specializes in the "pelting" of minks or raising minks in order to sell their fur.

    And so the adventure begins.

Mink Eyes by Dan Flanigan is a well-written novel and is sure to engage and maintain the interest and imagination of the reader. The characters are well developed and complex. This adds to the intensity of the novel and also helps the reader to relate to the imperfections of each of the participants in the story.

Also, the ending is quite surprising and nicely tied together as the shadowy character known as Mr. Canada is exposed and his devious ties to the mink farm.

Peter O’Keefe is a private detective who is on the case. The case of the Ponzi scheme with Mink up in the Ozarks. But things aren’t always what they seem, and when this battle-scarred Vietnam Vet starts digging deeper, he finds a disturbing amount of drugs, smuggling and murder intertwined in this entire operation. As he investigates, O’Keefe comes across Tag Parker, a woman who haunts him with her beauty and who is hopelessly entangled with “Mr. Canada” who is the reputed owner of the Ponzi scheme.
The story was centered on a mystery with a bit of crime thrown in. The plot meandered in places but overall it held together. Not many spelling, grammar or syntax errors which are my sticking point with a book, so that was good. A Vet myself, and my Grandfather a Vietnam era Vet, I was pleasantly surprised by the portrayal of Peter O’Keefe. He was jaded but not a caricature of Veteran stereotypes. I think that this book is a good read, it was light enough that I could enjoy it without having to think too deeply about the story to follow the plotline.

I've been reading a lot of thrillers/mystery lately and this one didn't disappoint. It's action packed and keeps you guessing. You can tell it's very well thought out even from the beginning. I like that the author is a lawyer himself. It adds an air of credibility and reality to his work. The length is just enough to not want to put it down, while also not being bogged down with fluff. Great book! I'll be on the look out for more.

Really enjoyed the rapid pace of both action and dialogue in this unusual setting for murder mystery. The hero is tragically flawed and while it would be easy to be critical of his choices, you can't help but want his world to turn out more like a fairytale than a myth. Well worth the read!
