4.0 out of 5 stars This very thoughtful take on mental health
Reviewed in India on October 16, 2022
The story revolves around Sania an IIM graduate. She is very passionate and ambitious about her career. She values her career over everything. Though she already achieved so much in her career she wants to go higher and higher. She works in the biggest media company in the country called New Era. Sania and her husband sameep have been married for four years. But Sania's hectic work life gets a toll on their marriage life. Though Sania trying her best to balance out everything between her professional and personal life. Will she be able to save her marriage or she choose her career over the marriage?

The story keeps alternating between Sania's past and present along with her diary entries. While I reading I just thought it is about the story of balancing between work and personal life. But it's more than that. While you reading you understand that Sania's past makes her take one after another bad decision. It's disrupting her present and also the lives of others around her. While you hate her present actions but after reading her diary entries you got to know the reason behind them. I loved the characterisation of Sameep. Modern but yet with a typical Indian men mindset that thinks it's the solely wife's responsibility to take care of the household. I feel bad for him. He complains a lot to Sania about giving importance to work more than family. I can understand everything has a limit beyond. Although he always being so patient. The way he tried to fix his marriage and be supportive of Sania is commendable.

The plot is simple and straightforward. I loved the writing style and storytelling skills. The author brilliantly provided a comprehensive account of corporate work life and also subtly touched on the sensitive topic of mental health. I love to read more of the Authors' other works.

Overall a light and refreshing story. An interesting tale of love, heartbreaks, marital life, corporate life and troubled childhood.

If you love to read contemporary fiction I recommend this.

    Book review :
"Love is priceless", a common saying but it demands a valuable price that one pays with a smile. At times paying the price is pinching but yet one pays because of love. Such a heart touching story of a woman is shared in this book.

The story is about love , grief , friendship, marriage, career, sacrifice and fun. The protagonist of the story , Sonia Ajmera who works in the biggest media company has everything that depicts her to be accomplished and satisfied person. But there is lot to explore.

The story moves back and forth. The events in the story are controversial at times . Sonia has a life that majority people would envy but she is damaged from within. She is falling apart from inside that turns the story and comes out a lot of hidden emotions and secrets.

The other characters perspectives, ideology and the way all the characters are brewed up in an adroit manner by the author is commendable. The language of the book is lucid, straight forward and captivating.

I loved reading this book and would recommend this heart touching story to all.
    Happy Reading!

“A Price to Love” by Smita Das Jain is a contemporary romance story that is centered around a couple Sonia Ajmera and her husband Sameep Agarwal who live in the Delhi NCR region. Sonia is a well-educated, ambitious woman who is highly respected by her peers and superiors but as the story unfolds we are introduced to her struggles and insecurities. Despite having a loving partner and a successful career, she feels something amiss in her life and finds it challenging to strike a balance between her professional and personal life. This story addresses themes such as love, career, relationships, infidelity, and mental health issues.

Why is Sonia unhappy despite marrying the man she loved? Why is she drowning herself in her work? What are her insecurities? Will she stray too far? What will happen to her failing marriage? These are the questions that pop up in the reader’s mind as the story progresses.

Sonia has a past that keeps haunting her. Her loving husband is not happy about her demanding career choices and she seems to be losing her interest in married life gradually. Her desire for external validation, adulation from unexpected avenues, and encounters with colleagues introduce the reader to her hidden grey shades.

Despite being the main protagonist, we as readers may also tend to dislike the protagonist for the choices she makes and all the lies she tells herself and the others. Why is she not emotionally available for her husband? Is she flawed or is there a reason why she behaves in a certain way? How will the story end? Read the book to find out.

The narration is smooth and crisp, and the vocabulary is aptly chosen. The switch across various timelines and the interspersed diary entries made the reading experience interesting. All the characters in the story are highly relatable because of the several shades they exhibit. And the story is sure to make one traverse through a variety of emotions.

Overall, I can say that it’s an unputdownable novel that one wouldn’t want to miss reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of an ambitious, self-made lady who has accomplished amazing things
Reviewed in India on October 19, 2022
Is it possible to love more than one person at a time? Is it possible to live with yourself if you know you're doing harm to someone you care about? Does it really matter when you're shattered and feel like you're drowning in your life? How do you deal with the knowledge that everyone you care about is being torn apart as a direct result of your actions?

The plot centers on Sonia, an ambitious, self-made lady who has accomplished amazing things in her brief professional life. Sonia seems to have it all in life: she is a graduate of IIM-Ahmedabad; she has a strong position at job, she is widely acknowledged for her work; and she is married to her college sweetheart, who adores her. Given all that, you'd think she'd be happy and content with her life. However, she is not. She can't seem to escape the ghosts of her past. What follows is a very powerful narrative of a young lady who is torn between her love for herself and the job she does, and her affection for the men in her life.

It would be an understatement to say that this book pushes the boundaries. It will appeal to the tastes of some individuals quite strongly. And some will be shocked by the lines that are crossed. A Price to Love by Smita Das Jain will cause you to reflect on your life through these characters. You won't be able to stop thinking about them, and you will find yourself wishing that you could improve their situations. I would recommend reading this book to you if you are the kind of person who takes a genuine interest in reading about a relationship going through its many highs and even more lows, as well as seeing how everything ultimately turns out.

‘Remember to love yourself first to give and get love from others. Be happy rather than chasing happiness.’
“A Price to Love” by “Smita Das Jain” is a story of an ambitious working woman suffering the consequences of continuously demanding corporate life. Finding a balance between work and personal life phase teetered Sonia’s sanity. The chaotic past and topsy-curvy present lead Sonia and the people around her into a mental mess.

Smita has weaved a story with a strong plot and themes portraying how relationships are crumbling under pressure, a millennial love, a mother-daughter connection, DPD (DEPENDENCY PERSONALITY DISORDER), and morality. The characters are good and relatable. However, I felt there was more development space. Though I like the continuous development of Sameep’s character.

I liked Sonia’s diary pages and tried to better portray her character. “I have a mental disorder." Celebrities can afford to talk openly about their mental health, but I am an ordinary person. I better keep quiet about it.” This is a line from Sonia’s diary, and it’s true, as for an ordinary person it is difficult to talk about their issues or therapy sessions. However, I feel the mental health issue was not explored in deep. Sonia’s character will raise a few eyebrows; however, I can’t deny the fact that she is relatable to many vulnerable women in society.

Overall, this is an engaging book, with some pros and cons, like some repetitive romantic scenes, but with a strong message of understanding the need for change and finding a balance between work and life.
