My Life Rearranged: Musings of an Alzheimer Caregiver Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

"A stirring book that offers an ideal blend of direction and comfort to fellow caregivers." —Kirkus

Pssst ...is your life being rearranged?

You are not alone. Alzheimer’s and dementia will turn your life inside out and upside down. In fact, there are many days you won’t know if you are coming or going. Susan Miller knows those days. Her husband was diagnosed with Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. She became the long distance caregiver for her father’s medical issues, followed by her mother’s diagnosis of dementia and then a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for her mother-in-law. After decades of caregiving and years of widowhood, Susan met a wonderful widower, only to discover signs of dementia. My Life Rearranged gives voice to what many caregivers think, but are reluctant to admit. You will discover:

  • The issues of love, loss, responsibility, duty, and self-preservation while navigating the stages of the disease.
  • What it’s like to struggle with a disease that strikes terror in people’s hearts and offers ways to come through intact.
  • How to lessen the isolation and loneliness of caregiving, and bring honest insight into the life of a caregiver.

Imagine coming home from the store and laying your package down, only to find it gone thirty minutes later, nowhere to be found.

Imagine looking for your favorite cereal in the morning, not finding it anywhere, and only later when you go to do a load of wash, do you find it.

Imagine living with your spouse of many years, only to awaken one day and find he has turned into a child.

Imagine thinking you are living in a house of cards, or that you are imagining it all, or perhaps it’s just a dream and you’ll soon awaken, but it’s not and you don’t.

Imagine repeating this scenario over and over again.

My Life Rearranged will tug at your heart, touch your soul, inspire you, and help you believe in your capabilities.

I absolutley LOVE this book. I am a hospice nurse as well as a daughter of a yet to be diagnosed mother with Alzheimers. Susan's stories and snippets of her journey are so relateable. I found myself saying "YES! THIS!" Many times as I was reading her book. The format of the book is perfect for the caregivers who don't have the luxury of sitting down and getting lost in a novel
I am a hospice nurse by trade and deal with many patients who have late stage Alzheimers as qell as their famies who have been caring for them. Although the details may be different their stories have a similar theme. Susan has captured the journey of these unsung heros we call caregivers to a T!
Her advice on support groups and her stance on the need for more caregiver services are spot on!
This disease, The Long Goodbye, is only growing in numbers.
I will be recommending this book to people in my personal and professional life.
I am quite sure it will be a blessing to those caregivers on the front lines and give them some comfort that there is someone out there that understands their journey.

Where can I even began to tell you how helpful this book has been already. We are just beginning the stage of the disease where most days he is someone else, but not every day. I have reread Chapter 1 three times and Chapter 2 twice. I am now starting chapter 4. This book gives me a peaceful feeling, knowing it is just not me having those thoughts and feelings and not knowing what to do. Written in the form or small thoughts or poems. I Highly Recommend this book to ANYONE who is or will be a caregiver. It has been my companion for the moments when I really need to have one. I feel like she lived the life I am living. Living it with frustration, anger, wonder, fear and love, most of all love.

I loved this book. I’m two years into a caregiver’s journey with my father. This book helped me feel seen and understood and helped me make some sense of this process.

In My Life Rearranged, Susan Miller gives us an honest, soul-searching portrait of her life and loving care for her husband, stricken with Alzheimer’s. The author explores, in great depth, the stunning array of emotions she experiences during a time of great challenge and stress. With courage and dignity, she encounters what seems at times an insurmountable situation. With great strength, she is able to overcome her sorrow and despair. Reading this book has been educational and led me to further research on this disease. I’ve become familiar with terms such as cueing and shadowing and other ways in which the Alzheimer’s patient communicates. Her gift to us is a blend. The book is at once a haunting and lyrical portrayal of a heartbreaking and courageous journey and an education and guide for caregivers.

With brute honesty Susan Miller shares her thoughts and feelings about being a caregiver to someone you love with Alzheimer's. This book is beautifully written - so touching, loving, and poetic...and very timely for my daughter, the primary caretaker of my mother-in-law who has dementia. I made sure to give my daughter a copy because I think the advice Ms. Miller offers is invaluable. A must-read for anyone who is a caregiver of loved one with dementia.

I liked the style of this book. It tugs at your heart .
It really demonstrated what happens as selfless caregiver gives up their life to care for one for whom no hope of recovery exists.

Beautifully written story/poetry that can be picked up at any point. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone who knows a caregiver, might ever become a caregiver, or knows anyone with Alzheimer's or dementia. The key take away for me was the importance of being present, at the very least, for the caregiver and for the patient. This story of love, loyalty, struggles, fears, resiliency and strength is a treasure.

I was the caregiver for my mother 20 years ago. Even though I was the least favorite child, I opened my heart and home. My mother-in-law is now on that path and I am trying to be supportive without repeating the gut-wrenching journey. This author has helped me to see, and be able to help, my husband and his sister as they care for their mom. I’ll refer to the book often with my underlined passages (a lot) and write notes to friends and family members that will, assuredly, make sense of this journey for caretakers. Thank you.
