About the author
As an award-winning investigative journalist, editor and political columnist, Alan Eysen wrote for 30 years about real-world financial and political corruption. At Newsday, he served on the investigative team that won the 1970 Pulitzer Prize exposing misconduct by Long Island public officials. Later, he became a political consultant and experienced the other side of the story. Today, Eysen resides in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where he continues to write and be inspired by the colorful characters and harrowing situations he experienced firsthand as a reporter. He can be found crafting his strong fictional characters with the help of an equally strong dry gin martini.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2016Enjoyable read from a new author. This book is filled with interesting characters, and I do mean characters. The author did an excellent job in personality development and as a reader, I felt I knew the Martini Club members as well as the others. The story is both witty and captivating and I went from laughing to gasping at some of the unexpected twists and turns. I hope to read more about the Martini Club members. We "older folks" still have a lot to give.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2016This book was a well balanced comedy, drama, and action story. It will especially resonate with seniors who will be able to see themselves in one or more of the characters. A delightful read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2016Eysen is a strong writer and terrific story-teller. As he takes us through the twists and turns of this debut novel he spices the story with generous helpings of homespun wisdom and insight. His eclectic cast of characters embody all that Eysen has learned about human nature during his years as an award-winning reporter, editor and political columnist.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2016I really, really enjoyed this very entertaining book. I was drawn in right away to a great story I found myself lost in. The Martini Club should build a large and loyal fan club. The quality of author Alan Eysen's storytelling skills has me looking forward to his next adventure with the Martini Club. Well done.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2016At first glance, Alan Eysen’s picaresque mystery tale suggests a time-honored barroom joke: a spy, a rabbi, and a con man - joined by their colorful “over the hill gang” -raise their glasses to a highly questionable get-rich-quick scheme and find themselves locked in a deadly battle with pure evil. But, there’s nothing laughable about their seduction by master schemer Rufus Bideau and his two dangerous sons and their plan to bilk the retired topers of their life savings, a plan that includes murder. Eysen’s storied career as a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist informs the crisp, realistic dialogue as the gin-and-vermouth mavens gather to swap stories, bicker among themselves and finally agree to the secretive business proposal that will rock their quiet community to its foundations. With an eye honed by years of experience the author deftly brings each character to life, crafting a narrative crackling with imagination, verisimilitude and, above all, humor. Just when it appears that the pigeons in this plot are about to be plucked, an extraordinary twist brings their individual special skills into play to save the day, and the fortunes of themselves, their friends and families. The bad guys vanquished, the good guys victorious, what’s left but to pick up their customary needling, argumentative meetings and wash the proceedings down with a few more flagons of what another great story-teller, Kurt Vonnegut, tagged as “the breakfast of champions,” a perfect martini, shaken or stirred!

Well written. Unable to put it down. A must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2016I was delighted to receive an advance copy of Alan Eysen's much anticipated first novel. The Martini Club Mystery did not disappoint. It is a fast paced tale full of colorful characters whose motivations are as interesting as their actions. As an investigative journalist Eysen has witnessed many examples of human greed, anger, vengeance, and disappointment, as well as nobility and generosity. He portrays these emotions through his fictional characters, but in reading his novel one senses that he is drawing on real observations and events to inform his fiction. As I finished the last page I found myself asking if the Martini Club would continue to meet and if its members will encounter more unsavory characters who will lure them out of retirement? I hope the answer is "yes."
