“Dougal, when we get to Da and Mum’s, there is something I want to show you.”
“What’s that, Mag?”
“There was an amulet,or something like that, that was in the box that the Italians gave me with Ben’s belongings. It looks very old. I don’t recognize it, and neither does Sarah. It reminds me of something from my childhood, but I’m a little foggy. I thought you might recognize it.”
“Sure, Mag. But I’m not sure I know much about all things Italian.”
“That’s the thing. I don’t think it’s Italian at all.”
When Dougal and Maggie got to their parents’ house, Dougal brought in Maggie’s bag and took it upstairs. Maggie lifted it up on the bed and opened it. She reached into the corner of the suitcase and brought out the amulet, giving it to Dougal.
Dougal let out a low whistle. “Maggie, this looks Pictish! Where did you say you got this?”
“It was in the box they gave me with Ben’s belongings from the basilica. I didn’t open the box until I got to Michigan, or I would have asked earlier.”
“This just might be quite remarkable. We should authenticate it. Would you be willing to have it carbon-dated at the university?”
