Oliver McQuiddy went over to his window and watched Dougal and Maggie leave. He waited several minutes, making sure they were well out of sight, and then he made a phone call.
“Master,” he said into the phone, keeping his voice low, “would it be possible to call his eminence and ask him to send someone into the Vatican vaults for some research?”
Oliver waited until the voice on the other end of the phone stopped, and then he continued. “An article was recovered from the basilica’s earthquake. It appears to be Pictish in origin. I am carbon-dating it, but it was found in the ruins around the tomb of our most holy saint. I thought we could research the journals of St. Francis to see if it was mentioned.”
Oliver again waited until the voice at the other end finished, and he ended the call with a simple, “Thank you. I will certainly let you know of the outcome.”
