Hogmanay came quickly – the week between seemed to fly by. This time, the Frasers gathered in Edinburgh, where they all went to the street party on Princes Street for the fireworks, and afterwardwent to Dougal and Kate’s. The clan stopped at the front door and waited even after Dougal unlocked it. Dougal turned to Ben as he flung open the door, sweeping his arm expansively as he invited Ben to enter first.
“Legend has it that if the First Footer is a tall, dark, and handsome man, the year will be a good one. After you, Dr. Tyler – bring us all good luck!”
Ben straightened up, hesitated just a bit, and then took an exaggerated step across the threshold. The rest clapped and laughed as they followed him in. He turned and grinned widely. He waved his arms wide, with great grandiosity.
“Happy 1997!”
“Well done, love,” said Maggie as she went to his side and gave him a quick hug. “Well done.”
Ben grinned. “Thanks for prepping me for this,” he whispered into her ear. Maggie just grinned.
Kate and Jessie busied themselves putting the children to bed upstairs as Dougal brought out the single malt.
“Anyone prefer Drambuie instead?” he asked as he started pouring the whiskey.
“I’ll take a Drambuie,” said Ailsa, and Maggie piped up, saying, “MacAllanneat.”
Drinks poured, the clan settled in the parlor and chatted as they finished their drinks. It was after 1:30 when Alexander, Ailsa, Ben, and Maggie left for Dunfermline – when they got to Ayton House, they all promptly went to bed. Maggie and Ben left for New York the next afternoon.
