It only took a few days to get the house in order, and once the kitchen was organized, Margaret fixed a nice lunch for Robert that she planned on taking next door – for the first time. She hadn’t mentioned she was going to do that, and her little surprise pleased her greatly. She packed it up carefully in a picnic basket, went out the back door, and headed over to the building with a little smile on her face. When she walked into the open back bay, she heard voices up front, so she headed that way. There she saw Robert and Dorothy leaning over the glass display case, deep in conversation about the drawing lying there.
Margaret was in shock.
“Robert?”
Robert looked up, obviously surprised.
“Oh – Margaret. I didn’t expect you.”
She offered up the picnic basket. “I brought you lunch.” She stared at Dorothy.
“You remember Dorothy, don’t you? I’ve hired her to help me here.”
Margaret stammered. “I only made lunch for one.”
Robert took the basket. “Thank you, Margaret. That was very thoughtful of you. Very unexpected.”
