The Party of the Gods

Ulyx awoke, ready for another day of learning. Then he remembered Lince could arrive any day, and he had better get the estate affairs in order. He was about to throw his legs over the side of the bed, when he froze. A face was forming out of shimmering blue light, on the ceiling above him. Blue, he thought. That was odd. He sat up suddenly and looked around the room. Everything else looked normal, and he was quite awake. When he looked up again, the face was still there. It glowed blue as it solidified into a striking man’s face. It looked so real, like he could reach out and touch it. When it spoke, though, he nearly fell out of bed.

“Ulyx Black.”

He supposed he should answer. “Yes. That’s me.”

“I am Aurumus, head God of Heaven.”

“Who? Of what?”

“Patience, son, I will explain. The glowing pink ball in the sky which you know as the sun is called Heaven. I and the other Gods live there, deriving our life energy from it.”

Ulyx was too stunned to say anything. His first thought was that the energy from the potion had gotten out of control, and causing his brain to generate dreams so powerful he saw them as real, even while fully awake. After a pause, the face continued speaking.

“I want to explain to you how your world was created, and where the power you have harnessed comes from.” The face seemed to be waiting for a response. Ulyx tried nodding and was surprised that it worked.

“We Gods spun your world Hume into being with particles we sent from heaven. Then we created Humans in our own image to populate it, and added a carefully designed balance of living things.”

Ulyx decided that whatever he was talking to, he could interact with it. “Are you telling me this now because I’ve discovered how to use the power from the sun?”

“Heaven, yes. I want to warn you. It is a powerful force. It must be used with discretion. If I see you using it purely for personal gain, I will be . . .” his face darkened. “Very displeased. You don’t want me to be displeased.”
