The smoke rose thick in the inn room while three figures hunched over a table.
“Absolutely not,” Niles said. “I won’t compromise my position in the Power Union. I do plan to have a future after this.”
Vilaz’s mouth twisted in disgust. “If you won’t use your Power to kill him what good are you?”
Findly put up a hand. “Come now. We’ve been through this before. He’s given us many tools, including his wits. Lince really doesn’t stand a chance.”
Vilaz shook his head while the piece of incense he was fiddling with snapped in two.
“Hey!” Niles grabbed the broken pieces from him and glared. “I use those.”
“Sorry,” Vilaz said.
Findly stood up. “This is ridiculous. We should retire and save our energy for tomorrow. We’ve already planned this thing to death.”
Vilaz gave a twisted smile as he, too, rose. “Or to the death.”
Niles moved a candle in front of himself and stared into it. “Let me know when the bath is free,” he said quietly. “I shall be clean before I get dirty.”
