Genetically Modifying Species
If there’s a choice between killing a dangerous creature or catching it and modifying it to leave you alone, what would you choose? Dead is pretty final. Dead is not existing anymore. No joy of warm sun, or the taste of fresh berries. Would the creature choose to live? Would their choice depend on whether or not they remember the previous version of themselves and crave the aggressive inclination that got them sentenced to death or difference? Would the existence only of modified individuals in a species still mean extinction of the original? Earth’s Ambassador has to wonder, as she and the crew and specialists of the world’s first deep space vessel work to complete a vital mission to cure a planet-wide alien pandemic. “An Upright?”
“Yes, I assume you haven’t encountered them. You won’t hear baris speak of them unless there’s a good reason to. There’s some debate about how to deal with them, so it creates discord to any meeting mentioning them.”
“Ok, I have to hear about these Uprights. It sounds like they could be like our ape.”
“I don’t know of the ape of course, but Uprights are large, clever, hairy creatures about our height when they lift themselves full up. They hunt the many forest dwellers and jungle inhabitants. Including us. Baris I mean. For some reason they aggressively hunt baris. Maybe we’re especially delicious, or maybe because they’re possessive of their hunting domains.”
“Oh! So why is there so much debate about them?”
Petmar jiggled his tail with short pauses between movements as he thought. “Fabarian scientists have found signs that these Uprights are likely to evolve into another intelligent biped if they’re left to do so. Some groups advocate wiping them out. Others say they should be protected. A faction thinks they should be taken into a lab and modified to not eat Fabaris.”
“I can understand that sentiment . . ."
