Captain Walsh felt an irritating itch in his left eye. He reached up to rub it, but bumped against a cage over it. “What in the universe?” He asked out loud. It was dark, which was normal for the observatory if he was doing a visual study though the dome. He reached for the light switch and found blankets instead. “Huh?” He said louder.
A familiar voice floated though his foggy thoughts. “Captain? How are you feeling?”
“Confused, Ambassador. Why am I wearing blankets in the observatory?” He reached out his hands for his instruments, but they waved through the air. “Where did they go?” he asked.
“Where did who go, Captain?” His boss asked calmly.
“My instruments!”
M.A. Zarabeth hurried over. “You’re in the hospital on Chiron. You might be seeing through your instruments with your left eye due to the nanites someone infused into it.”
Reality flooded back in. “Oh, yes. Do I need this padded blinding mask? I’m awake. I won’t touch my eye.”
“Yes, maybe that will trigger seeing what’s in the room instead of the nanite feed, if that’s what you want,” Zarabeth said, unhooking his mask.
“I do!”
When there was light, Walsh could see his data superimposed over the hospital room. He shook his head.
“No, don’t shake!” Zarabeth said with alarm. “Try placing a hand in front of your face and focusing on it.”
Walsh tried it. After a second of concentrating, the data popped away and he could see the room in full 3D like normal.
“That’s better,” Walsh said. He looked at O’Bien. “Ambassador, any progress on who did this to me?”
“Some, Rich. Officer Jensen has a list of suspects she’s interviewing.
