Walsh switched off and focused on keeping his body safe while he fumed. He called his chief operational engineer on the com again.
“Hugh, there’s a problem with Roed. Can you run the Quantum Displacement Drive?”
There was a long pause. “I’ve made every effort to learn the procedures in case of emergency. Is Roed ill?”
“Mentally. He’s trying to extort special treatment and denying he deserves prisoner status.”
Hugh sighed. “Honestly, our chances of surviving a displacement are ten to twenty percent higher if Roed is running the engine. It’s a big difference. If ad hoc adjustments are needed, he’s the one with the mental acuity to adjust the settings correctly. I’ve analysed our past QDs, and some of the little tweaks he makes seem to be intuitive and inexplicable. To me, anyway. I did try discussing them with him.”
“Understood,” Walsh said. “I’ll keep you posted.”
