Walsh tried to sit up, but a strap held him in place. “I’m holding up the mission?”
“It’s true that your recovery time is the main limiting factor in QD-ing to the Crystallisers’ planet. There were other people injured, though, who could benefit from more recovery time. Also, Roed wants to double check his algorithms given the fluctuations in the magnetic forces.”
Walsh visibly relaxed. “If Roed wants to double check, it really needs to be done. I’ll give him the time he needs before giving the go.”
“And the doctors will let you know when you’re allowed to make that call.”
“Wow, my eye is starting to see already,” Walsh said.
“Uh huh,” Karen said sarcastically.
“No, really!” Walsh said. “I’m seeing. I thought they said it would take two days.”
“They did. Imagination is a wonderful thing.”
Walsh waved a hand since straps kept him from shaking his head. “I hate to say this, but I’ve heard that sometimes people get better before they die…”
“I’ll call a doctor,” Karen said quickly.
Atland looked quizzical when he came. “Let’s have a look.” He shone a scanner light. “That’s odd. Let’s get you into the FBMD for a full 3D visualization of the ocular region.”
Lopez and Atland studied the scan. “The vitreous humour is swimming with nanodes!” Lopez said. “How did those get in there!” Her tone was accusatory.
“It wasn’t me!” Atland said. “There’s been tampering!”
Lopez wrinkled her brow. “We need to get a sample under the VAS.”
“Chief, we would need a biopsy for that. Are you comfortable with being that invasive so soon after surgery?” Atland asked.
Lopez sighed. “You’re right, that’s not ideal.” She frowned. “Someone on board knows exactly what’s in his eyes. There must be evidence somewhere. Maybe even left-over samples.”
“I’ll notify S6 and fill them in,” Atland said.
“I’ll see what I can find with the HVAS,” Lopez said.
Walsh had taken off his earphones. Eyes burning, he said, “I need to see Roed! He must have been up to illegal medical procedures again!”
Lopez put a hand on him. “I think it best you see Roed when you stop seeing red, so to speak. Cool off a bit. I need you to relax right now and let security do their job.”
