“Are you sure you aren’t afraid?” she asked.
Don looked up and said, “Well—maybe a little bit. You told me trolls grab children. I don’t know if I can run fast enough if one comes after me.”
Suddenly Don screamed. “Oh no! Beeze, something just reached up and tried to grab my leg!”
“I didn’t see it. I think you’re just imagining it,” she said. “You probably bumped into a low branch.” She attempted to reassure him, yet was still curious about the smell and Bossy. Strange things were happening and Virginia couldn’t figure it out.
“I’m not! I could feel it!” Don said. “I went to the edge by mistake and it reached up and grabbed my pants.”
“I guess we could turn around if you’re afraid,” Virginia said, trying to reassure her brother and herself. “Let’s head back. It does seem like something strange is going on. I think Aunt Lydia Mae and Uncle Glenn will have to wait.”
Don turned around and shouted over his shoulder, “I’m Superman fast! See you at Grandma’s.”
