“What are you doing in my yard?” asked the odor owner. “How did you get in here?”
“I’m exploring,” said Olivia. “There was a hole under the fence. Who are you?”
“My name is Margie and I live in Doc’s yard,” she said. “The kits probably dug the hole. They’ve been doing that a lot lately.”
“What is that on your head? I’ve never seen anything like it,” Olivia asked.
“Glasses that Doc made for me. I can’t see very well and kept falling into Doc’s pond. So, he made bonnet glasses for me. I can see things I had no idea existed,” Margie said.
“I can’t see very well either and my hearing isn’t good. But, I have a great ability to smell. I sure smelled you!” Olivia said.
“Well, my glasses are great, but I still don’t see that well at night. I could not see you and became frightened, so I sprayed,” Margie said.” “That’s what happens when I get scared. Sorry about that.”
“I think you got me pretty good. You must have good aim. How long does it take to wear off?” Olivia asked.
“I’m not sure, but I’ve heard people say it takes quite a while,” Margie said. “If you hang around here, you might meet my kits. They have no control over emitting that skunk special. In fact, the boys are always having spraying contests. They have left some skunk special all over Doc’s yard.”
“How do you stand it?” Olivia asked. “It’s pretty nasty smelling. I eat some road kill animals and they have strong odors, but this tops everything I’ve come across.”
“You get used to it. At least I can tell where my boys have been,” Margie said. “What’s your name? Where are you from?”
